It’s amazing how today more and more sport leagues realise the importance of using social media.
It’s a way to have a unique connection with fans on a personal level.
NFL clearly understood that point when they created their personal twitter account for the super bowl.
Now the PGA tour, which operates the main professional golf league in the United States, is also now aware of the power of social media to serve fans and expand the Tour’s footprint around the world.
The PGA tour currently has several active social media accounts. The main one of course is Twitter with 20.000 followers, their Facebook fan page has 37.000 fans and their Youtube channel has 4 million views.
Within all of these social media sites fans can ask questions, check all the scoring updates, real time posted news, free iPhone application full of video updates, live scoring, player cards and course reports.
By being so successful in their way of using social media, the PGA tour has created awareness, driven ticket sales and developed a close relationship with their fans. And that really makes the difference, by making a sport and it’s stars more approachable and accessible.
